Baccalaureate Degree Requirements

 

Graduation requirements are established to ensure that the Simmons educational objectives are met. Those objectives are:

• an ability to communicate effectively
• an understanding of languages and cultures other than one's own
• an ability to use technology to enhance learning
• an exposure to a broad range of courses and modes of thinking
• an opportunity for academic specialization, independent intellectual development, and career preparation
• an ability to work independently on a sustained research project and to apply one's knowledge in a practical context

The Bachelor of Arts degree is the baccalaureate degree conferred on students in all majors except those in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Nursing, Nutrition, and Physical Therapy, for which the Bachelor of Science is awarded. In the instance where a student completes a major in both science and in the arts, she may choose either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree. It is not possible to earn two baccalaureate degrees simultaneously.

A candidate for a degree is expected to complete satisfactorily the work of an approved program, including all required courses. A student who temporarily withdraws must meet the degree requirements in effect at the date of her readmission to the College.

Declaration of Major

Students may elect a major any time after completing 32 credit hours, but not later than completing 80 credit hours. Students failing to declare their majors upon the completion of 80 credit hours will not be permitted to register for further course work. Petitions for declaration of major are available in the Office of the Registrar. See the 2008-2010 Course Catalog for specific major requirements.

Declaration of Minor

A student may elect to minor in a subject area in which the College currently offers a major, although not all departments and programs offer this option (a number of interdisciplinary minors are also available). A minor consists of 20 semester hours. Information about specific course requirements for minors can be found in the departmental listings in the 2008-2010 Course Catalog.
