Providing Alternatives to Printed Materials

Alternative print format is one potential accommodation request listed on the official Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) form. Students may need printed material in an alternative format, such as larger print or an electronic text version, due to a vision disorder, a reading disorder, or a physical disorder which makes reading typically printed materials either difficult or impossible.

Converting Handouts, Syllabi, & Exams

Most times, instructors have access to an electronic version of the printed material used in their course. In these situations, instructors can either email the material to the student, or make the necessary modifications themselves. In situations where the electronic version is not available to the instructor, or the alternative format requires specialized technology, the instructor can contact Disability Services to provide the alternative format conversion. It is best to provide materials needing to be converted as early as possible.

Books on Tape

For students who require their textbooks to be converted to an alternative format Disability Services will contact you prior to the semester to request information for each required text. It is essential that this information is provided as quickly as possible to ensure that the student will have accessible texts when the semester begins.
