Beacon Street Housing

For the 2009-2010 academic year 1047 Beacon St. will be unavailable for housing.  Transfer students who have been housed at 1047 in the past will be housed in a transfer community in Morse Hall and with upperclass students around campus.  1025 Beacon St. will be available during the room selection process for returning students.

We are proud to offer housing at 1025 Beacon St. The brownstones in the area are quite charming and we feel confident you will be pleased with this housing option. To assist you in your transition to Simmons, there will be a Resident Advisor (RA) on site. The Resident Advisor will be there to provide information, a listening ear, or other assistance, as well as provide programs. There will also be a Professional Staff member to assist you during the academic year living at 1025 Beacon Street. The properties are very secure and Simmons Public Safety Office provides regular patrols. In addition, you will be able to enjoy your full meal plan on the residence and main campuses.

What will the facility be like at 1025 Beacon?

The residence hall like amenities you can expect are:

  • Each room will have standard twin beds
  • Each floor has its own bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower
  • Each floor has a large refrigerator, so it is not necessary to rent a mini fridge
  • Your room comes with a cable television hookup.
  • The building offers wireless internet to support your computing needs
  • Free laundry machines are located in the basement
  • A first floor living room offering a place to socialize and attend RA programs, as well as watch TV
  • A kitchenette is available on the lower level for your cooking needs

What am I allowed to bring with me to 1025 Beacon?

While living in the Beacon St. property you will be responsible for following a number of rules regarding health and safety. In addition to abiding by all policies stated in the Simmons College Student Handbook, please be aware of the following guidelines when deciding what to bring with you to your new home:

The following items will NOT be allowed in 1025 Beacon:

  • Any cooking appliances other than the college-supplied Microfridge
  • Additional refrigerators or appliances beyond that supplied by the college
  • Halogen lamps
  • Candles, incense, or any other type of flame or burning unit
  • All pets (With the exception of small fish that live in a 5-gallon fish tank or smaller)
  • Standard extension cords. ONLY power strips will be allowed in the facility (please note: it is a safety hazard to link several power strips together)

What do I need to know about the Brookline inspection process?

Brookline properties are required to undergo a housing inspection process every year from three agencies; fire, police, and housing. If the building does not pass the housing inspection, we lose our lease. As you can see, it is VERY important that we take the necessary steps to assure that every student living at the property is abiding by the inspection guidelines.

Per Brookline city guidelines, please be aware of the following when setting up your rooms:

  • All emergency exits need a 3 foot clearance the entire length of the room from the exit to the door of the room.
  • Do not leave any open food containers in rooms or around the house.
  • Microfridge and air conditioning unit needs to be plugged straight into the wall, i.e no extension cords

Students will be informed of the dates prior to inspection. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a clean and safe living environment.

Mail

You will receive all of your mail at your assigned Beacon St. address. For students living at both properties, you will find your complete mailing address when you are emailed with your housing assignment during the summer.
