MBA Office Updates We have officially started the new academic year as of today! Remember that it is a marathon and not a sprint. You will continue to hear me talk about the importance of balance in your work, personal and academic life!! Start this weekend thinking about how you are going to manage everything and know that it will be lots of big and small adjustments as your year begins! It is an exciting time for all of us in the program office as we welcome all the returning students back and all of our new MBA students that have just completed Foundations!! “What you have and the way you do it are incredibly simple. Whether you are willing to do it is another matter.” -- Peter Drucker Announcements Building Hours at SOM- Commonwealth Avenue Campus Bookstore hours for the satellite bookstore in Mockler have been posted on the SOM Gateway. These are the classroom assignments for the Fall 2008 semester: Authentic Leadership (Morgan-Roberts): Case Room 2 Academic Policy First Ever Travel Course for MBA Students! You are invited to one of the two info sessions on September 16th at 4pm and at 5:15pm in Caseroom 1 to get further infomation and to hear the faculty leaders for China and Brazil sections. Scheduled for December 19 as of today! Much more info to come... All new students have received their IDs during Foundations. Returning students have new IDs in the MBA office, but you MUST turn in your old ID to get a new one! If you have lost your old ID, you will have to pay a $25 fee. Accounting Section Added on Wednesday Nights As of August 28th, we had 56 students registered in Financial Accounting. We have made the decision to add an additional section on Wednesday nights that will also be taught by Jane Mooney. We think this is better from both a teaching and learning perspective! Here is the schedule for the new section: Wednesdays, 6-9pm, Sept. 10th-December 8th. PLUS: Monday, Nov 24 and Monday, December 8 (Final Exam) Please also note that anyone planning to go to the CSO expo on December 3rd will be allowed to attend the Monday class the week that event is running! If you are interested and/or able to switch sections, please let Katlyn know by email at katlyn.cavanaugh@simmons.edu. The Authentic Leadership Course will be running AS SCHEUDLED. There will be NO changes to the Authentic Leadership schedule. Room Changes for Public Speaking and Entrepreneurship: Managing a High Growth Firm Public Speaking with Dale DeLetis will be in Caseroom 1 instead of Caseroom 2 this semester, since we added a Wednesday night section for Financial Accounting. Entrepreneurship: Managing a High Growth Firm with Margaret Heffernan will be in the Purple Room instead of the Green Room. |

Article on SOM MBA Program Featured in Monday’s Financial Times This past Monday, the UK edition of The Financial Times ran a story on the School’s MBA program to answer the question: "Why, in this day and age, is there an MBA program for women?" The write-up covers the rigor of the MBA program, the gender lens, and the "cooperative competition" that is the SOM experience. Those interviewed include Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands, Professors Fiona Wilson and Jill Avery, and recent SOM alumna Cheryl Fudge ’07. The Simmons Entrepreneurship team seeks two MBA students to assist with a research study on Gender and Entrepreneurship Education. The time frame for the project is September and October of 2008 and will begin immediately. The hourly wage is $15. Services Updates Date: Tuesday, September 23rd Networking night for all Simmons SOM alumnae and current students. Join us for a night of socializing with your fellow Boston area alumnae at Vlora, Copley's newest and freshest Mediterranean restaurant. Stop by for a drink before you head home from work or meet a friend and stay for dinner. It will be a great opportunity to catch up with SOM friends, meet new ones and sample a new taste of Boston. Encourage prospective Simmons SOM students to join you as well. There will be free appetizers and cash bar. Date: Thursday, September 25, 2008 A hands-on workshop to discover what industry executives in the HBA E.D.G.E. in Leadership Study say are the most successful attitudes, motivations and programs that positively impact a woman’s ability to move her career forward. You will have the chance to assess your own leadership practices with a proprietary HBA E.D.G.E. self-diagnostic tool, and ask a panel of pharma/biotech Executives/HR/Diversity directors their experiences/insights into making it to the top. This event will inspire you to create and expand your personal leadership agenda.
