Updates Well, who would have thought that the Red Sox would
have pulled off their amazing comeback against the Indians to get to the
World Series and the Patriots remain undefeated. So this week, my analogy
relates to teams. In the comeback of the Red Sox and in the win last night,
it was different players who shined this time and my point is that teams are
built around the fact that everyone brings different skills and competencies
to the table that get utilized in a variety of situations. If you look at the
Red Sox rookies, they have taken advantage of all the opportunities that have
presented themselves and made the most of them. All of you are talented
women, you wouldn’t be here otherwise. Make the most of opportunities
you have in front of you to show everyone all the great things you can do.
The other obvious one is that never stop believing in your own capabilities,
because that desire to put forth the best effort you can, each and every day
will make your dreams come true! We’ll save the Patriots until next
week as that is a great story about execution!! “If
we all did the things we are capable of doing we would literally astound
ourselves.” “One
way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals.”
In the next few weeks, you may see a request from
some UG marketing students that will be asking you for some information that
will help them gather data for their senior seminar presentations. As I have
moved into my new job that spans both the UG and MBA programs, I am trying to
identify synergies where the MBA program can help our UG’s. For
example, below you will see a group that has a product targeting
international travelers, asking for MBA students that have traveled abroad in
the last year for business to fill out a short survey. I would ask you to
help them out if you can!!

For those of you that attended last Friday’s
tea with Ros Jaffe or the Business Plan competition, it was a chance to not
only watch your peers in action-presenting in front of 115 people, but also
to learn from some very successful executives how they react in the moment to
presentations in front of them, deliver feedback, ask probing questions, and
relate their business experience with concrete examples, suggestions, etc.
The goal to help continue to refine the ideas of the finalists was clear and
everyone in the room learned something. I also heard those who attended the
tea with Ros also really enjoyed listening to her story and getting a chance
to interact with another very successful entrepreneur and executive.
WINNER: Jennifer
Christian-Murtie, class of ’07, and current MBA Certificate
in Entrepreneurship student Yadumu Yadumu will provide comprehensive environmental,
economic, and sustainable development advice to hotels, lodges, and camps in
the ecotourism industry in Jennifer won $10,000 in cash plus in-kind prizes
valued at over $10,000 including legal services, logo design, brand
consulting and training programs. Jennifer, and the two other finalists presented to
a packed room of over 110, and the panel of 4 judges who said they were
impressed by the creativity and timely nature of her idea, tapping into a
major new trend, her passion for ecotourism, quality of the business
plan, knowledge of the African market and realistic vision and
financial goals. As a nice bonus, Yadumu also aligns
sustainability, social responsibility and profitability in its business
strategy, which are concepts and practices which are deeply integrated into
our MBA curriculum.
