MBA Office Updates

Note From Mary D.

Halfway done for the spring term!! Can you believe it and hope everyone enjoyed a few days off whether it was in the day or evening program. The evening accounting folks had a big midterm last night and the leading students had their midterm due yesterday as well. It is now the time of the year that the pressure of time, staying on top of preparation for every class at the same time you are prepping other papers, projects and exams starts to mount. Plan it out well so that you can manage all the other equally important priorities in your life!!

Quotes of the Week

~~James L. Fisher

“What is required for effective change is continuity of sincere effort to release and let go of inefficient thought patterns from the past.”

~~Doc Childre and Howard Martin, Freeze-Frame

SOMAA Board of Directors Announcement

The SOMAA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of the 2008 Student Representatives.  Representing the day class (part-time program) is Heather Lantz '08, and representing the evening class is Jennifer Albert '08.

Student Representatives are critical to the Alumnae Association as they represent the interests of current students, SOMAA’s pre-alumnae constituents.  Heather and Jennifer will serve as a bridge between the alumnae association and the current class of students.  Establishing a relationship between alumnae and students before graduation provides visibility into the network of professional women and is intended to encourage students to stay connected to the SOM and SOMAA after graduation.  In addition the Student Representatives ensure communication of SOMAA activities to the student community and shares student expectations, insights, and suggestions to the SOMAA Board.

Please join us in welcoming Heather and Jennifer to the SOMAA Board of Directors -- we look forward to their involvement, and to building a strong connection with current students.  We would also like to take the opportunity to thank Mandy Osborne and Geetha Krishnamurthy who served as the 2007 Student Reps.  Mandy and Geetha contributed much to the board, and their participation and involvement provided a valuable voice for current students to the Alumnae Association.

Dear Members of the SOM Class of 2008,

The SOM Office of Development and Alumnae Relations (ODAR) is seeking 2-3 dynamic, engaged students to serve as co-chairs for the Class of 2008 Gift, representing both the full and part-time programs. The class gift co-chairs work with ODAR
to recruit class gift committee members, develop a selection of class gift opportunities, and lead fundraising efforts for the class gift to the SOM. Co-chairs are instrumental in forming the class gift committee, and setting the goal for the class's gift. The class gift is presented to Dean Merrill-Sands by the co-chairs and committee members at the Dean's reception on the eve of Graduation (August 7, 2008). The event is highlighted with photos in the fall/winter issue of the Simmons alumnae magazine.

Please nominate yourself or a classmate by February 22, 2008 to serve as a co-chair or committee member. Previous fundraising or sales experience is desirable, though not required. Include a resume and 3- 4 sentences describing your (or your nominee’s) interest and motivation in taking on this role.

We are proud that the SOM carries a strong tradition of generous class gifts. As a non-profit, the SOM relies on the generosity of its alumnae through annual support (and students through the Class Gift campaign) to offer the best program possible to you. We hope your class will take its place among successful recent MBA classes by leading the way with an ambitious and generous gift to the School.

I'm writing to ask your help in encouraging students who don't own their own computers to complete our Student Use of Technology survey.

Technology Survey

I know it's ironic for us to be trying to collect information that includes students who do not own their own computers by using an online survey. We just can't manage the results of doing a paper survey.

Our past data has indicated that 95-98% of Simmons students own computers. That is in keeping with results at other schools.

Clearly, students without computers have responded, because 2-5% over the past 4 years have said they don't. However, given the college's Shared Academic Technology vision, which affirms Simmons' commitment to using technology in teaching and learning (when it is appropriate to do so), we want to be sure that we know more about potential impediments to student technology use.

The survey is the home page at every lab and general access computer on campus. We're going to put up flyers aimed at students who don't own their own computers. I'm going to ask some faculty to announce the survey in their classes.

If there is anything else you think I could do to encourage participation, please let me know.

And if you could publicize the link to this announcement, that would be great!

The Center for Gender in Organizations Winter/ Spring 2008 Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series,

Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Time: 12 noon – 1:30PM

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Boris Groysberg, Harvard Business School

Topic: Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?

Professor Groysberg's research focuses on the challenges of managing professional service firms, especially how firms develop, hire, retain, and utilize star knowledge workers. In this presentation he will discuss the issue of portability and the surprising findings from a study of investment banking professionals that women are able to maintain their star rankings more reliably than men after changing employers.  It appears that there are a number of things that occur in the process of becoming stars that make female analysts portable in a way their male colleagues are not.  Professor Groysburg will discuss these factors and lead a discussion about the practical implications of his findings for women, men and the field of knowledge work.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu by March 21, 2008 for “Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?”

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Time: 12 noon- 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School

Topic: Unmasking Masculinity

For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness.  Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms.  Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.
