MBA Office Updates It is hard to believe that we are now through week 3 of the semester! Just think 20% of your semester is already over!! I say that as a sign that the weeks will fly by but the next two weeks will mark the moment when all of your fall classes are in full swing and you may need to readjust how you keep up with the work and everything else going on in your life. It is a normal part of the fall cycle particularly for new students, but everyone tends to feel it in different ways. So don’t think it is just you if you have a moment where you feel the need to re-calibrate everything!! For my sports fans, the Patriots showed that despite a major setback with key personnel, that they were ready, prepared and able to stand up and deliver in the moment. It was awesome!! Note From the MBA Admissions Team Congratulations to all of the new Simmons SOM students who are beginning their MBA studies this fall. It has been a pleasure working with you all these last exciting months, and the MBA Admissions team wishes you the best in your studies here and beyond. Now that you have begun your MBA, after months, or in some cases years, of wondering whether you can “do” it, do you see colleagues and friends in a similar situation? The MBA Admissions team is accepting referrals from current students and in return, we would like to say thank you, on behalf of our office and your friend, in the form of a gift certificate to the Simmons Bookstore. If your friend/colleague ultimately enrolls, we will issue you a thank you gift certificate. Thank you for your commitment to the Simmons SOM community and again, congratulations from the MBA Admissions staff! “Champions aren't made in gyms. They are made from something they have deep inside them: a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill." --Muhammad Ali “I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” -- Ralph Nader Announcements Returning Student Mentors Needed! We have started a new Pre-MBA program this fall that has some students interested in the MBA program taking either Leading or Accounting and also studying for the Kaplan course. We would like to offer some returning students to serve as mentors to them with questions, concerns, how you balance school with all the other things in your life etc. if you are interested, please email Christine.carr2@simmons.edu in Admissions or Darla.pires-degrace@simmons.edu in the Program office. We don’t think it will take much time, but it could really help a student thinking about her MBA! Current Students Needed to Mentor Undergradate Students! I had a meeting with some undergrads last night who are looking to learn from MBA students and be mentored by them. If any new or current students are interested in mentoring our undergrad majors, please email Mary D. at mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu and we will try and match you!! Simmons College Honor Board Seeks an SOM MBA Student Representative Simmons College has an Honor Board that serves as the group that investigates all charges of academic integrity at the College. It is a board made up of faculty and students from all the Simmons schools, and serves a critically important role in upholding the College Honor Code. If any students are interested, please email Mary D at mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu or Joanna Conroy in the student life office at Joanna.conroy@simmons.edu by September 25th. We have had great success having SOM representation over the past few years. Part-Time Job for Simmons Student The Advancement Office is looking for a dependable graduate student to work with our Phone Program and manage up to 23 students. This requires evening hours and the job description is posted in the MBA office. Order Your MBA Business Cards! SOM Student Clubs and Organizations The MBA Office would like to see if any students are interested in joining one of our exisiting clubs! Net ImpactNet Impact at Simmons School of Management explores the power of socially responsible business to create a better world, and to achieve commercial success through approaches that respect ethical values, people, communities and the environment. Net Impact at Simmons helps members broaden their business education, build their networks, refine their leadership skills, and pursue their professional goals. Non-Profit Management ClubStarted in the fall of 2007, this club was founded in order to extend course curriculum into non-profit management content via informal, student led dialogues in conjunction with SOM faculty and non-profit leaders in the community. Long-term goals of the Club are to develop a Brown-Bag Series focused on specific non-profit sector issues, which will be open to the entire SOM community, including alumnae. Simmons Consulting GroupThe mission of the Consulting Club is to provide career exploration in the field of Consulting. Whether your interests are in a specific field of consulting or you are just exploring the consulting industry, our events will help bring you closer to determining your career objectives. Entrepreneurship ClubAre you interested in starting and growing a new business or expanding a current business? The Entrepreneurship Club will:
Entrepreneurship is more than a set of tools and techniques for starting and growing a business. It's a mindset, a way of looking at things that is opportunity focused and creative. It's about passion -- doing what you love. It's about creating wealth in all its forms: money, independence, power, and innovation. It's about challenge and persistence. And it's about creativity and writing new execution strategies for the way things are done. Ethics ClubThe mission of the Ethics Club is to serve as a learning resource to Simmons MBA students for a wide range of business ethics issues. The club will examine how ethical decisions impact business successes or failures. Areas of interest include sustainability; economic, social and environmental concerns; corporate accountability; ethical decision making; socially responsible investing; and social enterprise. The assumption is that ethical issues are complex business dilemmas for which better decisions can be found through ongoing discussion. Finance/Investment ClubThe focus of this group is to learn more about the topics of finance and personal investing, build on the knowledge learned in the classroom and network with other students working in or pursuing a career in finance. Project Management ClubIt has been said that you lead people and manage projects... while that's an ongoing OB debate, take a step toward understanding project management and share your experiences with others by participating in a student group dedicated to Project Management. Student Academic CouncilThe Student Academic Council (SAC) is a volunteer group that serves an advisory role to the MBA Office. The SAC mission is to enhance students' educational experience inside and outside of the classroom and further the MBA office goal of continuous improvement to the MBA program. Some of SAC roles include representing students' interests within the SOM community on current or proposed changes to the MBA program, and serving as a liaison between students, faculty, the administration, and the alumnae. Social ClubThe Social Club is a group of students from both the day and evening programs that help plan social events for students throughout the year. Women of Color ClubMission statement is to empower, develop, and enrich the lives of the SOM women of color through personal and professional development. Schedule Updates Friday, September 26, 1-4pm Project Management Class with Professor Paul Myers to help with Marketing and Leading Projects.
