Note From Mary D.

April is officially here, which means 16 days til the end of the semester! For many of you, that is comforting and for others unbelievably scary! Use your time wisely and be smart as you study and work in your teams. Know the warning signs in your personality and health when you are under stress and take some time off to rest and recharge your batteries for the final push of the semester. Spring is in the air and a week off is in your sights!!

Quotes of the week

The Center for Gender in Organizations Winter/ Spring 2008 Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series,

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Time: 12 noon- 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School

Topic: Unmasking Masculinity

For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness.  Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms.  Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu  by April 11, 2008 for “Unmasking Masculinity

Library Updates

Library Blog

Because there’s always something we want to show you but never seem to have enough time to run it over to you, the SOM librarians have created a blog (http://somlibrarian.wordpress.com/) as a clearing house for all items of interest to the Simmons School of Management community.

This blog is currently unnamed, and we would like to invite the SOM community in helping us to give it a name. Please email suggested names to wick2@simmons.edu. The winner will receive web immortality as well as a posh new tote bag!

We hope that you find this blog helpful and if you have any suggested topics or items to post, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Leadership Book Display

With a new month comes a new book display in the library! Please stop by and check out our new display featuring books on leadership. Selected titles include The Power of Nice: How to Conquer the Business World With Kindness and Shackleton’s Way: Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer.
